Nice meeting you and looking forward to seeing you again!

Always be willing to chat people up in town, both player and NPC you never know who will have some interesting information or stories to tell. Some of my favorite plots have been player made and driven ones, because they tend to throw cast for a loop.

There's a path that runs along the edge of the lake, then back into the woods along a stream, and up a hill back into the camp area. I once took that path at night without any sort of light or even a bright moon. It was on that night I knew man's mortal fear of the dark.

    That made me lol XD

Hey there, I can do both! Yes we are in the woods and yes there are a lot of them. Your first night out I would recommend going in a group of people….in fact, I will always recommend going with a group of people for many reasons. 1) Safety in numbers (sort of) 2)Less likely for 4-8 people to get lost. (Don't go past the train tracks) 3) If you scream because number 1 is proving ineffective, more people will likely hear you if you're in a group. Night fighting and RP is fun, just take the same precautions as you would during the day. At some point during your strolls you will gain some vision adjustment as you're walking along. Try not to fight off trails if you're unsure of yourself and your surroundings.

Finding people to spar with is a great thing, and like Matt said finding a style to work with and practicing it works wonders as well. Take the skills you're coming into game with and look for movies and instructional videos on how to use them better. Sword and shield for example, look up SCA combat videos as they're a heavier version of boffer combat. Watch other people's movements, don't just watch their upper torso, footwork is just as important as anything else.

I don't know if a kingdom would fly, but a town or village shouldn't be an issue. Without letting others know further about your backstory I would contact cast and ask them.

Doing something for a weekend is a beast of a totally different color. Any sport/martial arts match lasts for an hour or two. Even if you spend an entire day playing airsoft or paintball, you also have to take into consideration that this is for 3 days. 12lbs doesn't seem very heavy and in truth it isn't, but carry that 12lbs around on your arms for hours of the day, over the course of 3 days as well as running (there's a lot of that) fighting and other exertions and you'll be panting. Throw in real armor and you're looking at another 15-50lbs (depending on what you're wearing) distributed all over you. Again, totally your choice and if you can do it, good on you mate. Another thought is that wearing metal armor in July also raises your chance for heat exhaustion substantially, if you haven't fought in armor in heat before (not sure if you're in SCA or other similar organization) you might not be aware of what your limits are. I've run around in chain mail before, and holy C@*# is that stuff heavy when you're running. As the others bought up also, the safety issue is the most important thing to worry about. But if your armor has no spiky bits then you should be ok.

Although real pieces of armor admittedly look far cooler than say their foam board counter parts, they are often ridiculously heavy and cumbersome to be carrying around for an entire weekend. I definitely do not recommend it, other lighter materials are perfectly acceptable though. I have made plenty of shields in the past if you have any questions on construction shoot me a PM.

Like those other guys said, welcome and looking forward to having you on board. Please feel free to ask questions and talk to the other folks around. See you soon!

I have to agree with Ryan on his advice on playing for your first event. It gives you a better feel for the game and lets you experience what it would be like to truly be your character. While casting is great also, I really believe that a person should play at least once. There will be plenty of time for cast to abu…um, utilize you on your cast shift.Milo's recommendations are great also as far as gear to bring. Also socks, socks, sock and socks. You're going to need them.
