Realms of Adventure Digital Events Combat System

Realms of Adventure Digital Events Combat System

In the interest of allowing for more diverse and interactive combat, we’ve updated our combat system for this digital event!  The new system consists of a collaborative narration between you and the cast member running the mod alongside digital dice rolling to ensure a level of risk and excitement.  It will also reward creative thinking in the form of making overcoming challenges easier and allowing for greater use of the abilities on your character sheet.

There are three states a player may be in:

  • Healthy – This is the status an individual is in when they’re completely ready to go and have not taken damage. Generally, all players are assumed to begin here unless a mod calls for otherwise such as the result of traps or other effects earlier within the mod.. Anyone in Healthy or Injured status may participate in combat.
  • Injured – This is the status an individual is in after a single roll has been failed in combat. They may still participate in combat, but if they fail again, they’ll become Incapacitated.
  • Incapacitated – This is the status an individual falls into after failing combat rolls twice. They may not act in any way without assistance from other players. This is generally represented by unconsciousness.

Combat consists of up to 3 rounds, and may NOT extend further under any circumstances.

When your group is approached with a situation in-game that might require combat, and you inform the cast member running the mod that you’re intending on fighting, the cast member will inform you what the general assumed difficulty of the fight will be, especially whether or not it is winnable or a guaranteed loss. A Target Number must be rolled on a d100 during fighting rounds, and that number will generally be kept a secret. However in some cases it may be shared openly.  It is safe to assume that the more difficult the encounter, the higher the Target number and vice versa.  Most encounters will include a flat number to overcome, but this number can be modified in favor of the players by the application of creative use of skills and tactics.   Combats are won by achieving a hidden number of Successful Rolls.

ANY player may take any of the following Four Actions available to them in combat encounters. Fight, Support, Tend Injuries, or Flee

  • Fight – This represents direct conflict with NPCs in the form of fighting with weapons or offensive spells.  Players may describe their action in detail, and the target number may be lowered if the cast member running the module deems it appropriate. (Actions such as using powerful skills or specific spells may lower the difficulty, or using spells or skills a target may have a known weakness to).
  •
  • Support – This represents the casting of beneficial spells and abilities on allies or casting detrimental non-damaging spells on enemies. This automatically improves the chances of other allies to reach the target number.  Up to two allies may benefit from this. If there are only two players left in the round, the same player may benefit from Support twice. This may be used in conjunction with Tend Injuries or Flee but if you choose to do so, you may only Support a single ally. The bonus gained from the Support action does NOT carry between rounds.
  • Tend Injuries – This represents assisting allies in returning to consciousness via any variety of small negligible consumables or healing spells. This raises the status of up to 2 players from Injured to Healthy or from Incapacitated to Injured. This may be used on yourself if you are Injured. This may be used in conjunction with Support or Flee, but if you choose to do so, you may only Tend Injuries on a single ally.  An individual who is brought back to Injured from Incapaciated may use their actions as normal within the current round.
  • Flee – This represents attempting to remove oneself entirely from combat and removing oneself from the threats within.  This is NOT an action that will always be available. This removes an individual from the encounter entirely (but not from the mod necessarily). This may be used in conjunction with Tend Injuries or Support, but it restricts the targets of those abilities to a single person.

Actions will always be resolved in order of Tend Injuries –> Support –> Flee –> Fight, but all are considered to be happening “at the same time” in regards to the world.

Round 1: Players who are either Injured or Healthy describe their next actions, either to Fight, Tend Injuries, Support, or Flee.

All players using the Fight action roll against the target number.  Any players that Fight and did not reach their target numbers become Injured, and those that met the target number remain Healthy. Anyone using the Support or Tend Injuries action remains in the same state as long as at least one player is Fighting.  Otherwise, they become Injured if Healthy or Incapacitated if Injured. The total amount of successes will be noted by the individual running the combat. If that target number is met in the first round, the combat ends in victory for the players.

Round 2: This runs similar to round 1, where players who are Injured or Healthy declare their actions and describe in particular what their characters are doing. The actions resolve as noted above, and if at any point the total number of successes is reached by the group in Fighting, the encounter is resolved.  As long as there are individuals in the Healthy or Injured state at the end of this combat, it continues to round 3.

Round 3: This is the final round of combat, and runs as all of the others with a few exceptions:

If Flee has been chosen either by itself or as part of Support or Tend Injuries, and Flee is allowed in the encounter (Players will be informed if it is not), that individual survives.  What that means will be determined by the module and individual running the encounter.

If the needed number of Successes are NOT rolled by those who have chosen to Fight, all left within the combat will be considered to be Incapacitated (bleeding out) regardless of state at the start of the round.  At this point a player must inform the individual running the encounter whether or not they have any special abilities such as Hard to Kill that might let them survive such a state.  Abilities that allow an individual to survive this state are not only limited to Hard to Kill, but ARE limited to only being used once over the course of the weekend. (One effect that allows one to survive this state per character for the entire weekend, regardless of source or amount available to the character.)  Individuals that die during the course of these encounters will visit Negoro as normal. Any survivors will be told what their fates and options are on a case-by-case basis by the individual running the encounter.

Things to remember:

  • The Target number that must be rolled for is generally kept secret (on some occasions, an encounter runner may deem it appropriate to share this number), as is the number of Successes required in an encounter to emerge victorious. However, it is safe to assume that generally, the number of successes starts at or around the amount of players within the combat itself and can be adjusted accordingly.  Remember, all rolls are made on d100s.
  • Combat may NEVER go longer than 3 rounds, for balance purposes, so strategic use of abilities and actions is strongly encouraged.  Creativity wins battles. Turtling will almost guarantee a loss all around.
  • The third round is the most dangerous. While even a single individual may begin a chain of tending that might allow most of the party to escape, or perform a daring last stand, remember, everyone still present at the end of the round if it has not been won has a very good chance of dying.
  • Target numbers for Fighting attempts and amounts of Successes can be raised or lowered depending on circumstances.  If you stepped on a trap earlier in the dungeon, it might mean you’re Injured walking into the next encounter, or that the enemy you’re fighting has an advantage over you, and its Target number is higher because of it.  Alternatively, a trap you set for the enemy might put them on their heels, giving you an edge in combat and lowering the Target or Successes needed.
  • PvP is still not allowed within the current system, and any disputes during mods arising from disagreements on how to proceed will be handled by majority vote within the group, for ease of simplifying.
  • Tend Injuries may be used even if you do not have access to healing Spells or healing consumables normally.  This system assumes your character would have easy access to those things to use in an encounter you might find yourself in.
  • Support may be used even if you do not specifically have buffing or debuffing abilities, as it represents an individual devoting their efforts to ensuring their allies success in combat, and can be something as simple as distracting an enemy so an ally can strike easier.
  • The individual running the encounter has the final say in all modifiers and outcomes of the encounter. Since individual outcomes may vary, and all situations are different, skills and abilities may not have a universal value that they apply during things like Support or Fight actions across mods being run by different individuals, or even the same individuals.

Mod Descriptions and Mod Survey for September Digital Event

The Mod Survey is posted at the bottom of this post!

You can find the link to the Mod Descriptions here:

Below you will find the mod descriptions you can choose from. Being that it is realms night, we will be allowing you to choose 2 mods from the list below that you are most interested in, AND then there will be a third mod that will count toward the results of Realms Night: Will the infernals have the upper hand for the next 4 years or will the Celestials take the win? Help your chosen side! You will be placed on a Realms Night competition mod by staff based on what team you choose to compete for in your survey. Everyone will get their 2 chosen mods and 1 competition mod. As a friendly reminder if you plan to play your alt character for any of these mods then you must have paid for the Alt Fee found on the registration pages of the website. Here are the mods:

Into the woods

The Druid Aryanna is looking for assistance in reclaiming an object of  importance to the wood elves and other druids that were stolen. The mission is expected to involve tracking and fighting, but the plan is to whittle down the enemy as much as possible with “creative problem solving.”

Temple of Doom

A cleric of Drevaria is looking for help. The ruins of an old Drevarrain Temple/Tomb was just excavated nearby. He is looking for able-bodied adventurers to explore, map, and find out who is entombed in this place. Sounds like a simple enough task…how dangerous could this really be…

Judgement Day

Due to the preparation of the upcoming moving of many individuals of New Calendale, there have been some lapses in guard patrols and the dealing of legal matters. The nobles are looking to deputize a group of literate citizens in good standing as temporary Legal Judges. There will be a thorough check into anyone willing to be of service. These individuals will be tasked with presiding over cases, determining the guilt or innocence of those involved, and determining the penalty.

 Security Think Tank

Sarano Thillyk has a business providing security services to private residences and businesses. Sarano is looking to hire individuals with knowledge of thievery and the art of crime to give him insight into how to protect his patrons and to best arrange his security systems and utilize his resources. This is a consulting job to help Sarano theory craft defences to help protect his customers.

House of the Lost

A disheveled, but well-dressed woman has come to you for aid. Her brother was dared to go into the abandoned mansion by the edge of the woods, and has yet to come back. She fears that he has gotten himself lost inside or injured. Are you brave enough to go inside and find him?

Devil’s in the Details

In the spirit of Realms Night, a devil drops you a hint that some Goblinoids have kidnapped innocent folk and are preparing to sacrifice them… to it. The Devil suggests you go and stop that. Expect to spill a lot of greenskin blood, and hope they don’t spill yours.

Falling Skies

A failed ritual has torn a portal into the elemental realm of Air dragging innocent people into it. You are tasked with venturing into the realm to recover the innocent people and close the portal. Expect lighting, wind and danger!

Ghost Busters

A merchant has been having trouble with ghosts. Every few months the same spirits manifest causing trouble for the merchant. Once more they need these ghosts dealt with and will pay well for them to be dispelled, and more if they can be dealt with permanently.

A Bug’s Life (On the line)

While exploring a mine, an unexpected cave-in separates an explorer from her hiveborn companion. To make matters worse, the hiveborn’s trained insect guards are agitated and making it difficult to rescue the hiveborn. The explorer comes to town begging for help, horrified that her friend is going to bleed out, the cave is going to collapse, and her friend’s insects are going to run amok!

Cove-ert Operation

After a night of drinking, a sailor of dubious origins has approached you with a deal. The Sea Elf explained to you that their captain discovered some kind of relic in a temple, but turned on his crew and left them for dead as the temple sunk. The Sea Elf escaped, and has promised the Captain’s treasure for assistance in stealing back the relic. A frontal assault would be suicide, but there is a back entrance to the pirate’s hideou. With a little bit of stealth, they say, you can be in and out before anyone knows you were ever there.

The Necromancer’s Family

A concerned citizen approaches you for help. Having discovered that her brother’s wife is a necromancer, she is very concerned for his safety and the safety of her young nephew. She hasn’t heard from her brother since he made the discovery, and she fears the worst. Help her investigate the fate of her family, and maybe bop a few zombies along the way.

Nomadic Negotiations

A forester has approached the town looking for help with a group of displaced barbarians who have settled on land reserved for the nobility. The forester would rather the group not come to harm, but  knows that if the nobility finds out about the squatters they could be in a lot of danger. The forester has expressed that the people of New Calendale are the last chance they have of tracking and relocating the barbarians peacefully.

 Put your Soul in Jeopardy!

Come be a Contestant for the hottest Game Show being transmitted to scrying orbs across all of Adravath! Your Knowledge of a wide variety of categories will be put to the Test. First place will take home a Fabulous Prize while Last place may regret they even tried… (Disclaimer: This Mod is Light Hearted and borderline silly)

Lair of the Infernalist

You’re approached by a cloaked figure under the cover of night, who hands you a letter. When you look up, the figure has vanished. The letter reads, “In the spirit of Realms of Night, I extend to you an invitation. One of my students no longer lives, and so I invite you to our realm to explore his refuge. Should you survive the experience, you may take with you whatever you find. Do not make light of this, your wit and strength will be pushed to their very limits. If you feel yourself sufficient, I will collect you upon the appointed night.”

This is a little embarrassing…

An infernal approaches you asking for help.  He explains that he has an extremely embarrassing problem, and he can’t go to help for anyone with it other than mortals because if other Infernals find out about it, he’s pretty sure he’ll be laughed out of the Infernal Realm and lose his job (a fate far worse than death.)

September Digital Event 2020

September 2020 RoA Digital Event: Realms Night

The first RoA digital event was a huge success and we’re happy to announce we’re going to be hosting another! We’re also happy to say that it’s going to be themed around Realms Night! We understand that dressing up is a huge part of Realms Night, and we understand it’s upsetting that it can’t really be done effectively at a digital event. However, we’re excited to announce we’re also going to ALSO be hosting a dress-up style in-game event at a physical event within the first few events of the return to physical events.

As can be expected, there are aspects that will be somewhat difficult to translate into the digital space. Much in the same way that the digital space gave us the opportunity to showcase new and different aspects of the setting and lore, we will have the chance to do things we’ve been unable to do in previous years and hope you’ll join us for it.

What is Realms Night?

Please see the document here to learn the story of Realms Night!

Realms Night is a holiday that occurs in Adraveth every 4 years to celebrate the creation of the Infernal and Celestial Realms as well as to determine which realm will become empowered for the next 4 years. The celebrations usually take place over the course of a full weekend. All individuals have the option (and are encouraged to!) pick a side to represent: Celestial or Infernal. There is no social stigma to picking either side.  During this time, Celestials and Infernals have been known to walk Adraveth itself encouraging and supporting those who have chosen to represent their respective sides. The restrictions on speaking with Infernal beings is lifted during this time in the spirit of the holiday. Games and contests are held across the world in celebration of this time, and their outcome has weight in determining which side wins it all.

Realms of Adventure Digital Events Info

For the digital event, we are going to ensure that players who are involved have the opportunity to be involved in two “mods.” If more is able to run, we will include it in the survey – more on the topic of surveys later.

Unlike normal mods, these mods will occur at scheduled times that we tell players in advance. (Folks are welcome to hang out in the “Scroll and Dragon” part of the Discord when not in a mod, and an NPC will still come and grab you when it is time.) We’ll post the exact mod prior to the event itself.

Most if not all of the mods available will have descriptions given prior to the survey being posted. In order to determine which mods players be involved with, we ask that people select and rank their top four choices from the plots on the attached list using the linked survey (In the event you are interested in less than 4 mods, please use the No Further Interest option).  The theme of the upcoming Digital Event in September is around Realm’s Night (Full post can be found: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1S5UpHxW-IVKnvJ6J8K2DkxgGQiLlWNLx_6A7iTN2GP4/edit?fbclid=IwAR0mmZF7h31rHg3xUeriuQy74OXsxYZbvkEQmuqYVRUwXjQPnE6X0nQe0WQ) and as such the survey will run a bit differently. It will be very apparent how the survey will work when you see it. Based on the options people pick, we will determine which mods to run and when. The survey will generally will be open for several days.

In the event that a mod has high interest beyond the player cap, preference will be given to players who can best engage with the content, either by virtue of connections to the plot or NPCs they’ve already made in game, or having a skillset more relevant to the encounter.

If for some reason a mod that you are interested in does not happen, don’t worry as we’ll likely find a way to run it at an upcoming event. (In other words, no plots will penalize you because a mod isn’t run at the digital event.)

As always if folks have questions feel free to ask them and we’ll do our best to answer them quickly.

We look forward to chatting and roleplaying with you all soon!

We are using our discord server for this Digital Event, below is some information to keep in mind :

  1. Players and cast alike who haven’t logged on to discord yet, should do so by August 31st (Or the pre registration end date for the digital event you are attending), to ensure that they have access to the discord (Contact Dave R for the link to the server) . (Ideally this is done from a computer, so that it is easier to see some of the images and documents that may accompany a mod)
  2. Players will be required to adjust their nickname on the discord to be that of their character,an example of this is: Winston Ragglesprocket (Dave R). We would also appreciate it if you could change your profile picture to that of your character however this is not a requirement.
  3. Mod Descriptions are strictly Out of Game. Your character will have no knowledge of what is happening on that mod prior to being pulled for it by an NPC
  4. You may NOT trade mods with others – once you complete the survey and that’s it.
  5. Everyone must enable the “push to talk” option. This is to prevent everyone from talking over each other, please be considerate of each other.
  6. Do not enter the mod space without NPC letting you in, even if it pops up for you. Think of this similar to the rules with green portals at live events – just because it’s a 2 way portal doesn’t mean you go through it without an NPC with you.
  7. If you do not yet have a character sheet or a character made but wish to participate, you MUST contact Dave R by August 31st (Or the pre registration end date for the digital event you are attending) or even if you do fill out the survey, you will be unable to attend. We will not be allowing anyone WITHOUT a character sheet, in the discord server on the day of the event which is September 12-13th, 2020. (As an aside, unlike the june digital event if you do not register you will be NOT be able to come in and roleplay during the event and furthermore you must still have a character sheet on file in the event you wish to just attend and roleplay as your character)

Any questions regarding this please reach out to Dave R via email Dave.R@realmsofadventure.net.
