Playing at night

Hey guys, I am eagerly waiting for the 19th to roll around so I can meet all you and start swinging my sword at you, haha. But in all seriousness, I was a little bit nervous about the “night-fighting” and about RPing in the pitch black forest. Can anybody share their experiences to either assuage my fears or dramatically increase them?

Hey there, I can do both! Yes we are in the woods and yes there are a lot of them. Your first night out I would recommend going in a group of people….in fact, I will always recommend going with a group of people for many reasons. 1) Safety in numbers (sort of) 2)Less likely for 4-8 people to get lost. (Don't go past the train tracks) 3) If you scream because number 1 is proving ineffective, more people will likely hear you if you're in a group. Night fighting and RP is fun, just take the same precautions as you would during the day. At some point during your strolls you will gain some vision adjustment as you're walking along. Try not to fight off trails if you're unsure of yourself and your surroundings.

A trick I learned when dealing with dark areas in the woods, if you close your eyes for about 30 seconds after leaving a relatively well-lit area, and then re-open them your eyes will adjust to the darkness better.  I don't suggest doing that while fighting as that would be dangerous, obviously.

Hey man glad to see you are so into it. I'm sure you'll have a blast!Anyways to answer your question...I love boffer fighting and play a heavy combat character but night tends to be my worst enemy. Depth perception takes a hit and you can't tell who is approaching you until they are basically there. Then there is the problem of enemies seemingly coming from no where and you being surrounded. If you see someone coming towards you on the road try to call out to them to get them to ID themselves, if they don't respond I would try to avoid them or head the other direction. Then again I have terrible night vision so you may not be in the same boat.

I agree with all of this. Also watch your step it is easy to trip on something or someone if you cant see.

Sometimes, when you see a figure moving in the dark….don't always assume its a bad guy and rush in to attack. It may be a fellow citizen. And if you are a caster or have friends who are casters then you could get a light spell from them if you are unsure of your footing along the paths. Though chances are if you have anything lit people will constantly yell at you to turn it off for one reason or another. Be it letting the enemy and creatures know your location or destroying their night vision. But if its just because of their night vision I say you tell them that you are being safe for yourself, and not to worry about them in that case.

There's a path that runs along the edge of the lake, then back into the woods along a stream, and up a hill back into the camp area. I once took that path at night without any sort of light or even a bright moon. It was on that night I knew man's mortal fear of the dark.

Yeah being alone in the dark in such an area is unpleasant

Hush! Fear of the dark is nothing to laugh at. When you cannot see your brain fills in the blanks. And that is what scares us. We try to identify what is making that noise or whats making that shadow figure. For me....I have a wild imagination and instead of thinking up normal things my head starts going for the scariest things it can imagine.

All kidding aside you can mostly stick to the trails and it's tough to get *truly* lost. Also every magical class is able to cast light so you can easily get someone to light a glowstick for you which helps. For any that are especially worried about getting lost in the woods, one thing people have done in the past is bring a whistle. Just in case, you can blow it and people can find you. The key is, *IF* it happens? Don't panic. Also, bring a towel.

Second night of my first game here, I was going to bed early and on my way through the woods alone to get there, and I saw a light in the trees, right ahead on the road in the way I needed to go. I wasn't sure what it was, and it didn't answer when I called out to see who was there, so I ended up having a tense stand-off with it for about fifteen minutes. Eventually, I went to check on it, and it was just a glowstick somebody left in a tree.So do be a little careful about this. ._.

Happens more often than you might think. I am a big fat guy, but I am also fairly well known for my stealth. Hiding is not a simple matter of finding a tree big enough to hide behind, it's about bending light and shadow and finding the right spot to be in. I have often stalked people through the woods with tricks like this.
